3-MMC, also known as 3-Methylmethcathinone and 3-mephedrone, is a synthetic cathinone closely related in structure to the more well-known chemical mephedrone (4-MMC). It’s one of the more well-researched synthetic cathinones, as it’s been tested in large mammals . 3-MMC is known for having fast-acting yet short-lived euphoric effects . Its full name is 2-(methylamino)-1-(3-methylphenyl)-1-Propanone and its molecular formula is C11H15NO .
In a study on pigs, researchers found that intravenous and oral doses of 3-MMC both resulted in rapid absorption, with a peak concentration reached within 5 to 10 minutes after administration. They found that the half-life was just 48 minutes. In measuring the effects of 3-MMC on feed intake and body weight, researchers found that it caused reduced feed intake and a lower rate of body weight gain in young, growing pigs .
In a study on rat liver cells, researchers found that 3-MMC caused oxidative stress, cell death and autophagy, suggesting that the metabolic effects of 3-MMC may be caused by its hepatotoxicity .
