SGT-78 is a synthetic cannabinoid that also goes by the names CYMYL-4CN-BINACA and CUMYL-CYBINACA. It’s an indazole-3-carboxamide-based compound with the formal name 1-(4-cyanobutyl)-N-(1-methyl-1-phenylethyl)-1H-indazole-3-carboxamide (C22H24N4O) . SGT-78 produces highly evident physiological and psychoactive effects. Research shows it has a high affinity for binding with cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, but it favors CB1 receptors. In comparing SGT-78 with its closely related SGT-25 (5F-CUMYL-PINACA), researchers found SGT-78 to be more potent, forming a tighter bind with cannabinoid receptors .
In a 2019 study published in “Frontiers in Pharmacology,” researchers looked at the effects of SGT-78 on mice. They found that the effects of it binding so tightly to CB1 receptors can have convulsant effects and produce a hypothermic reaction. Notably, the researchers concluded that these effects occurred at a dose lower than has been reported for any other synthetic cannabinoid, suggesting it operates within the endocannabinoid system at a high level of potency .
Another study, published in 2018 in “Drug Test Analysis,” found that when the body metabolizes SGT-78, it produces the deadly toxin cyanide as a byproduct .
